BJP accuses Mayawati government of Rs.5,000 crore land scam

Lucknow, May 23 (IANS) Accusing Uttar Pradesh's Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government of indulging in land scams worth Rs.5,000 crore in Noida, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday demanded a probe into the case by a special investigation team (SIT).

"On the pretext of undertaking developmental schemes, the Mayawati government forcibly acquired over one crore square feet land in Dostpur-Mangrauli village in Noida. Thereafter, the acquired land was transformed into farm houses that were allotted to non-existent companies," BJP national secretary Kirit Somaiya told reporters here.

"Against the market price ranging Rs.15,000-20,000 per square metre, the farmers were given a compensation of around Rs.888 per square metre for their acquired land. It's surprising and shocking...the move adopted by the state government exposes its anti-farmer policies. We will soon meet the governor so that an SIT enquiry could be initiated into the case," said Somaiya.

The BJP also demanded that the land acquired from farmers must be immediately handed back to them or else the party would undertake a campaign to fight for the farmers' rights.
