Bhajan Lal laid to rest with state honours
Adampur (Haryana), June 4 (IANS) Former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal, who died Friday, was buried in this town Saturday evening with full state honours.
Bhajan Lal was buried as per traditions of the Bishnoi community to which he belonged.
A contingent of the Haryana Police reversed their arms as a mark of mourning.
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, ministers and leaders from several political parties were present on the occasion.
Bhajan Lal died following a heart attack in Hisar. He was 80.
Earlier, Bhajan Lal’s mortal remains were brought to this town, from where he started his small business and later his political career, from Hisar about 25 km from here.
Bhajan Lal served as the chief minister for three terms and was the MP from Hisar.
He was ailing for the last few months. He was rushed to a private hospital Friday evening where doctors declared him dead after failing to resuscitate him.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal visited Hisar and offered his condolences to his family members.
Hundreds of people visited the house of the departed leader and were later present during his burial.
Bhajan Lal is survived by his wife Jasma Devi, two sons - former Haryana deputy chief minister Chander Mohan and Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) president and former MP Kuldip Bishnoi - and a daughter, Roshni.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi sent condolence messages to Jasma Devi.
The Haryana government announced a public holiday in the state Saturday. It also declared a three-day state mourning following Bhajan Lal's death.
