Bengal to have six more languages for official use
Kolkata, May 26 (IANS) West Bengal has decided to recognise six languages, other than Bengali, as official languages, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said Thursday.
“Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Oriya, Santhali and Gurumukhi will be used for official purposes wherever applicable,” said Banerjee at the state secretariat.
She said Urdu language will also be recognised as second language in districts where the population of Urdu-speaking people is over 10 percent.
The government has also decided to rename Aliah University as Aliah Madrasah University. “Earlier, the university was known as Calcutta Madrasah and after it was renamed Aliah University many people had resented the dropping of the word madrasah from the name,” said Banerjee.
