Anna writes to Sonia, slams claims of BJP link
New Delhi, June 12 (IANS) Veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare Sunday wrote to Congress president Sonia Gandhi expressing his displeasure ovr her party calling him the face of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swamsevak Sangh (RSS).
"I am very upset with such allegations made against me. This is a matter of deep concern for me," wrote Hazare in a three-page letter.
"When responsible people in the government and your party start lying just to remain in power, it's not a good sign for our nation," he added.
Slamming the Congress party, Hazare said that these were efforts to malign his image and senior party leaders should refrain from such antics as such a campaign would harm the formulation of the proposed Lokpal bill.
"It is propaganda by some Congress leaders who do not want me to get the support that I managed to get on April 5 at Jantar Mantar," he wrote of his fast that compelled the government to form a joint panel to draft the proposed bill.
Rebuffing the claims further Hazare said that it was because of his agitations in Maharashtra that several political leaders belonging to BJP, Shiv Sena and Congress had to pay for their corrupt practices.
"When I campaigned in Gujarat shortly after the Jantar Mantar agitation I didn't shy away from saying that the state was suffering from the problem of corruption even if the BJP was in power there," wrote Hazare.
The reformer further accused the government of not being serious about formulation of the Lokpal bill and was slinging mud at the members of the civil society who are part of the joint drafting committee.
"Apart from rejecting many important topics proposed by us, wrong allegations were imposed on the members of civil society like Prashant Bhushan and Shanti Bhushan... People from your party then started giving statements related to Santosh Hegde too," said Hazare.
"I have even heard that people have been assigned to enquire whether Arvind Kejriwal and I had property. But nothing inappropriate was found. Obviously, this was done to embarrass and discourage us," he added.
Accusing the government of lying and bluffing, Hazare declared that his agitation at Jantar Mantar will commence Aug 16 if a strong and strict Lokpal bill is not passed by Aug 15.
