AIADMK landslide: Some surprised, some not
Chennai, May 13 (IANS) The allies of the AIADMK expressed mixed reactions Friday to the landslide victory that their front is expected to post in the 2011 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
"We never expected a victory of this scale. We knew the DMK government was on its way out. But we did not expect such anger in the people against them," T.K. Rangarajan of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and parliament member, told IANS.
He is happy that the CPI-M, a partner in the AIADMK-led alliance, was leading in 10 out of the 12 seats it contested in the April 13 elections.
On the reasons for the massive victory and whether the alliance mathematics did the magic, he said: "The AIADMK party is a solid force and nobody can deny that. The joining together of the DMDK, the Left parties and others also helped in a major way without splitting the votes."
According to Rangarajan, the DMK should introspect and take corrective action or else it will be the beginning of its end.
Another Leftist leader said: "It seems the DMK cadre themselves did not vote for the party. They did not work well during the campaign and it now turns out that they have not even voted for their party."
DMDK leader Panruti S. Ramachandran said his party expected a massive mandate in favour of the alliance.
"We expected such a result. The corruption by the ruling DMK government and the strength of the AIADMK alliance made the people throw out the incumbent government," he said.
The AIADMK was leading in 199 seats out of the 234 assembly seats in the state.
