Advani slams government inaction on graft, black money

Mumbai, Sep 12 (IANS) The central government is "not doing enough" to curb corruption and bring back black money stashed abroad, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani said Monday.

Stating that his proposed nationwide ‘rath yatra’ will focus on the twin issues of graft and black money, Advani told reporters here that the inaction created "doubts" in the mind whether this is due to the presence of some people in the government.

“Look at countries like America or Germany, which have successfully applied pressure and brought back its money hidden abroad. Our government has not done enough on this front,” Advani asserted.

However, he declined to specify the date or itinerary of his proposed yatra. Party officials indicated that the schedule would be announced next week.

Earlier, welcoming the Supreme Court ruling in a 2002 Gujarat communal riots case, Advani termed state Chief Minister Narendra Modi “an outstanding leader of the party”.

“I have not seen any politician maligned like Modi. In the country’s political history, there has never been such misinformation propaganda against any political leader,” Advani said.

He described as "rare" the good governance and administration provided by Modi in Gujarat, which, he said, is hardly seen in any state or country.

He added that Modi is capable of discharging any responsibility assigned by the party, and said it is “good” that the apex court did not accept or subscribe to the propaganda against Modi.

The Supreme Court Monday declined to pass an order on Modi’s alleged inaction to control the 2002 Gujarat riots after the Godhra train carnage and referred the matter to the trial court in Ahmedabad.
