Abel Tasman National Park


The Abel Tasman National Park is a nationalized park situated in the northern corner of New Zealand’s Southern Island. It is spread on an area of 22.3 square kilometers and is regarded as the country’s tiniest national park. The place is wooded, mountainous country, to the north of the Riwaka and Takaka river valleys. In the north the park is surrounded by the Tasman and Golden bay.


The national park is well-known for beautiful scenic coastline filled with golden sandy beaches, beautiful bays, tiny islands and serene water.

To discover and admire the endless beauty of Abel Tasman National Park, you can go for trekking (tramping) activities.

Tonga Island Marine Reserve

You can also visit the Tonga Island Marine Reserve, which is a secluded region on South Island’s northern coast and is adjacent to the Abel Tasman National Park. You can catch a glimpse of the beautiful fur seal in their local colonies.

Walking tour

You can tour the national park by foot. Taking a leisurely walk enables you to explore the beauty of the park. You will be immersed in the serenity and peace after a sunset and can wake up to a song from the native bird.

You can spend your nights at the compact lodges situated in Torrent bay.

Cruise

From the secluded Kaiteriteri beach you can cruise on boats along the Astrolabe Roadstead islands and go past through sulpted sandstone headlands.

Bark Bay & other activites

You can also visit the secluded the Bark Bay and relax in the sheltered camping region or take a dip in the azure tranquil waters, or simply sunbath and unwind yourself beneath the shadow of the local trees in the forest. Some of the other activities you can do here are Kayaking, canoeing, camping etc.

How to get there

From the town of Motueka, the park is easily accessible at a distance of 20 kilometers. It takes only 20 to 30 minutes journey to reach the park.
