9,000 people travel on Airport Metro daily

New Delhi, May 4 (IANS) The high-speed Airport Express Line (AEL) has recorded a daily ridership of 9,000 commuters, many of whom are non-fliers, the Delhi Metro said Wednesday.

 
 According to Reliance Infrastructure, which runs the 23-km Metro stretch, a recently conducted survey revealed that around 2,500 people boarded the train daily from stations in Dwarka, southwest Delhi.
 
 "In the last two months, dependency of non-fliers travelling in the AEL has increased rapidly. Particularly, the residents from Dwarka avail of the service as they can reach Connaught Place and New Delhi Railway Station in 20 minutes flat," an official of the Delhi Airport Metro Express Private Limited (DAMEPL) said.
 
 "Many commuters avail of monthly passes of Rs.1,200 to travel between Dwarka and Shivaji Stadium and Rs.1,500 to travel between Dwarka and New Delhi Railway Station," the official added.
 
 Running at a maximum speed of 105 km an hour, the AEL, which opened Feb 23, has six stations, of which four - New Delhi Railway Station, Shivaji Stadium, Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and Dwarka Sec-21  - are operational. Dhaula Kuan and Delhi Aero City stations are yet to become functional.
