500,000 Libyans have got UN-delivered food

Rome, June 19 (IANS/AKI) More than half a million people affected by the conflict in Libya have received food delivered by the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

Fighting began between rebels and Muammar Gaddafi's military in February.

The Rome-based WFP said it has delivered "vital food assistance to more than 500,000 people affected by the ongoing fighting between the government and rebels in Libya, even as concerns continue to grow about access to food inside the country".

"The price of many food commodities has more than doubled in areas heavily affected by fighting," it said in a statement.

Since it began to deliver food supplies into Libya in March soon after the conflict began, the WFP has distributed aid to over 270,000 people in eastern Libya, 136,000 people in western Libya's Nafusa mountain region, and to an additional 125,000 people in the city of Misrata, the UN said.
