Safe Winter Wonderland
The right decorating decision this holiday season can make the difference between a winter wonderland and a danger zone. Traditional winter holiday decorating often includes displaying plants, such as mistletoe and holly, but few know that these plants are actually poisonous. Before setting any plants out where kids and pets can get to them, make sure you know which are safe and which are not. Setting Up Your Tree When setting up a tree, place it away from fireplaces and open flames. Heated rooms can dry trees out rapidly; so, be sure to keep the stand filled with water and place the tree out of high traffic areas and doorways. Keeping Lights Safe Fasten lights securely to trees, walls, or roof trims to protect the lights from being blown off by the wind. Hanging lights can be a choking hazard to your family, house guests, and neighbors. Insulated staples are helpful to hold strings of lights in place. Do not use nails or tacks, they can puncture the protective coating around the wires and expose them, which can be dangerous. Avoid Flash Fires Do not burn wrapping paper in your fireplace. Wrapping paper ignites suddenly and burns intensely; therefore a flash fire could occur. Properly Hanging Decorations Hanging decorations and lights can make your home a beautiful scene. Be careful not to let them hang too close to the ground because they can easily turn into a choking hazard to your children and your pets. Caution: Hot Liquids Hot tea and hot chocolate can be a cozy treat on Christmas Eve. Be sure to keep these delicious, but hot liquids away from the edges of tables where they can easily be knocked over by your child and their exploring hands. Picking a Beautifully Safe Tree When you and your family are picking out a tree, be sure to bounce the trunk of the tree on the ground. If a significant amount of needles fall out and shower the ground, the tree is too dry. That type of tree will not only last very long in your home, but can eventually become a holiday hazard. Dreaming of a White Christmas? Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? Spray snow can be great to give your home that little blast of winter, but take caution where and how you are spraying the snow. The spray can be toxic if inhaled and/or ingested. Be sure to read the spray can label and follow the directions. Home Sweet Home Christmas should be safe and fun for everyone in your home. Be sure to test all your smoke detectors. Don't allow the hustle and bustle of the holidays let you be complacent with safety. Holiday Night Lights Everyone wants their wonderland to be the brightest on the block. Double check all extensions to make sure plugs are properly fastened and never connect more than 3 standard-size sets of lights together per extension cord. |
