Plan to announce grace period for illegal residents
Posted on 12/20/2010 Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Mohammed Al-Kandari has announced that his ministry and the Ministry of Interior will coordinate to grant illegal laborers a grace period to adjust their residencies, or leave Kuwait without paying any fines. Al-Kandari called on non-Kuwaiti laborers and employers to take advantage of the grace period once it is approved, in order to avoid penalties for illegal residency. He added that the total number of illegal laborers who left Kuwait in 2010 was 45,000, pointing out that the total number of expat laborers in the private sector in Kuwait has reached 1,100,000. He went on to mention the ministry's policy of limiting the number of expat laborers for the last four years based on the recommendations of the Cabinet and National Assembly, wherein the population of expat laborers decreased by 200,000. He stressed that the ministry continues to issue work permits for sectors where there is a requirement. He added that the meeting between the two ministries will be held soon to discuss the status of illegal laborers, since the ministry is serious about its efforts to improve the condition of foreign laborers. He mentioned that the statistics show that the number of expats to Kuwait reached 150,000 in 2006, 170,000 in 2007, 82,000 in 2008, and 72,000 in 2009. He explained that there was a slight increase in the number of expats this year because of the major projects that have been executed lately in Kuwait as part of the government's development plan. He stressed that the year 2011 will witness the execution of several projects in the fields of social family care development; in addition to several developmental projects for senior citizens. |
