Dear Barack Obama and Michelle Obama,
You CAME---as our honoured guests,You SAW---our country,our people,our progress,our achievements and You CONQUERED--our hearts.Your historic visit to India has carved out a niche for you both in the hearts of millions of Indians. We thank you and admire you----for being the first U.S.President to visit India during his first term in office. ---for choosing India as the first country in your tour of four countries. ----for not visiting Pakistan during this tour,thus conveying a loud and clear message to the whole world.(It is customary for U.S.Presidents to visit Pakistan,when they visit India. ) ----for spending the maximum time in India,in your four-nation tour. ----for your simplicity,which was evident in all your public appearances in our country. -----for your informality,in dancing with the students of the New Hope High School,in Mumbai. -----for your openness,in answering questions posed to you at the ST.Xavier's College,Mumbai and at the Joint Press Conference in Delhi. -----for your bold declaration that India is not only an Asian power,it is a world power.(It requires enormous conviction for U.S.president to say this.Some of our own pessimistic countrymen do not agree with this) -----for your appreciation for India's growth,by stating that India is not an emerging power,it has already "emerged". -----for the historic speech you delivered at the Indian Parliament (extempore,without even a small bit of paper in your hands,bravo Obama),in which you made references to Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali (where the head is held high),Ambedkar,Panchatantra,"0",our ancient civilisation,the bylanes of Chandni Chowk,the high-rise buildings of Bangaluru,Kolkata,,the farmers of Punjab,Vivekananda,Mahatma Gandhi etc.We were moved when you said that you would not be the President of USA today,but for the influence Gandhi's life had on you. -------for indicating that you would support India's case for becoming a member of UNSC (though we are conscious of the fact that it will take years for this wish to materialise) ------for reaching out to the survivors and the kith and kin of the victims of 26--11 and emphatically declaring that the perpetrators of the crime should be brought tro justice. ----for sending out a clear message to Pakistan (without naming them,due to geo-political compulsions) that the terror camps across the border with India should be demolished. ------for candidly admitting that India is an equal partner with USA and you want to strengthen the strategic ties between our two countries. ------for openly stating that the time has come for India to give and U.S.to accept. --------for appealing to India to increase its trade with USA,in order to create more jobs in your recession-hit country,where unemployment is high. -----------for making so many other announcements to improve our trade and political ties. -----------for your cheerrful disposition,fund of knowledge and spontaniety in answering questions and choosing the right words to convey your thoughts. MICHELLE OBAMA-------------------------for the moving and inspiring speech you delivered at the St.Xavier's College,Mumbai,in which you mentioned about your childhood and youth and how your parents taught you to put values above anything else in life and for exhorting the youth to dream big and work hard to translate their dreams into reality. -------for your simplicity and enthusiasm in mixing with children,artisans,women,students and the glitterati who attended luncheons and dinners. As one of millions of Indians who was glued to the television channels (NDTV 24X7,TIMES NOW,CNN-IBN AND DD NEWS) watching all your public engagements live,I was deeply impressed with both of you.How we wish we have such young,dynamic and intelligent leaders in our country!.It is sad to see the defeat suffered by your party in the recent election in USA.You have inherited a bad legacy from your predecessor---an arrogant war monger,who has messed up your country's economy and landed your country in an unenviable quagmire.It is sad to note that your countrymen want quickfix solutions to problems which would take years to sort out.You have all our goodwill and prayers for your overcoming these problems.YOU CAN----STILL YOU CAN.Deep in our hearts we do believe that you will overcome the challenges facing you.I,.with millions of Indians,wish you success in all your sincere endeavours and pray that your adherence to Gandhian values should help you to vanquish your detreactors and come out of the crisis facing your country,singing the tune of triumph.
