Huge Rise In Rents Has Made Life Difficult: Kuwaitis, Expats

‘Public, Police Cooperation Vital To Maintain Order’

KUWAIT CITY, April 17: A number of Kuwaiti citizens and expatriates expressed their resentment over the greed of landlords who increase the rents exorbitantly without considering the fact that their tenants have limited income and such rent hikes add to their daily burdens in life. Some tenants said the rents of apartments are the highest in the world, urging the government to intervene in this issue and put an end to this negative phenomenon.

A Kuwaiti citizen Mahmoud Al-Ali revealed that he spends most of his income on the monthly rents, adding that he hopes the government will find a quick and lasting solution to the housing problem. Another citizen, Ahmad Al-Bousairi said it is not conceivable to pay rents reaching KD 700 per month. An expatriate said he rented a small apartment with one bedroom and a hall in Fintas for KD 90 per month.

However, it was soon increased to KD 150 after which he was forced to evacuate after the power supply was cut off when the building was sold to a new landlord. Some expatriates revealed that they are suffering a lot because they have low salaries while their house rents have increased by 100 percent, the prices of commodities and school fees have increased and they are also faced with other obligations such as health insurance.

Lawyer Mohammad Al-Enzi affirmed that the current law for organizing real-estate rents has many flaws, which enable the landlord to increase rents and evict tenants based on a court verdict and under the pretext of sub-leasing or failure to pay rents until the 20th day of the month
