Current power consumption highest in Kuwait history
Power loads have reached the maximum rate of usage in the history of Kuwait on Sunday, as it edged 10,280 megawatts, thereby surpassing last year's rate of 9,960.
The Minister of Electricity and Water Badr Al-Shuraiaan expected that power consumption rate may rise up to 10,700, megawatts in the coming period, due to high temperatures, while the current production capacity is estimated at 11,200 megawatt.
During an inspection tour to the Control Center, the minister described the current summer season as the ministry's last challenge, considering that 2011 will witness the launching of phase 1 of the Subayya power station project which will boost power production capacity.
Al-Shuraiaan ruled out the prospect of resorting to programmed power disconnection this summer, saying that there is about a surplus production of 500 megawatts. He, however, warned that in the event that one of the power grids broke down, the ministry would resort to the programmed disconnection.
The minister added that the Gulf Power Link will be useful in the coming period, adding that the country is not currently receiving any supplies from the project.
