78 Expats Referred For Deportation For Driving Without License – GTD
MoI Eyes Harsher Punishments On Motorists Using Cell Phones KUWAIT CITY, May 23: The recent statistical report released by the General Traffic Department (GTD) showed that 78 expatriates of different nationalities have been referred for deportation due to certain traffic violations like driving without a license, says Ministry of Interior’s Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs Major General Abdullah Al- Muhanna. In a press statement, Al- Muhanna revealed these expatriates were arrested from April 23 to May 18. He confirmed the Traffic Affairs Sector is working in accordance with a strategy on the strict implementation of traffic regulations to save people’s lives and to at least reduce, if not, eliminate traffic accidents. He added clear instructions have been given to the concerned authorities to address the issue and refer expatriates arrested for driving without a license to the Deportation Department. He pointed out such measures are aimed at deterring others from violating traffic rules and regulations, as well as to protect the lives of road users. Meanwhile, Director General of the Public Relations and Security Media Department Brigadier Adel Al-Hashash has affirmed the continuation of awareness campaigns to prevent motorists from driving without a license. He said the department has started the implementation of an integrated media plan to reach out to the largest number of people through such campaigns. He went on to say that the department had previously announced its plan to implement this decision as a way of advising the public to take the necessary precautions in order to avoid legal problems. He asserted all expatriates must respect the law and strictly follow instructions to guarantee safety on the road. He reiterated that any expatriate proven to have violated the law will be deported to serve as deterrent to others. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior is currently studying the recommendation to impose harsher punishments on motorists who use mobile phones by hand while driving, reports Al-Shahed daily quoting sources. Sources disclosed the reports presented by the General Traffic Department (GTD) cited the use of mobile phones by hand while driving as one of the main causes of traffic accidents, most of which led to death. Sources said the senior leaders have given importance to these reports and recommended harsher penalties for those who use mobile phones by hand while driving. Sources added these penalties include suspension of driving license for three months, KD250 fine and impounding the vehicle for a month. 78 arrested in security sweep Securitymen from the Capital Security Directorate carried out a campaign to track down those who violated the laws in compliance with the directive of Assistant Undersecretary for Public Security Affairs Major General Abdul Fattah Al-Ali and Director of the security directorate Major General Ibrahim Al-Tarrah. During the campaign, the security officers arrested 78 people, including 14 marginalized workers, 24 who violated the Residency Law, 25 without valid identification documents, several hawkers and seven citizens, four of whom are women, wanted by law for involvement in financial cases. All those arrested were referred to the concerned security department for the necessary legal procedures.
