You need to distinguish between education, and the education system.
Education itself is important to communal harmony, as to function in society, and dfor society itself to function at all well, people need to learn what are socially acceptable behaviours. They need to learn how to communicate (speak, listen, read write), how to get things done (ask politely, ask the right people, grow things, make things), how to survive (cook, eat, clean, don’t jump off high buildings). These are essentially survival skills. The education system seeks to standardise much of this and extend it into academic and vocational skills. Some of this is important for functioning in the sort of society we have (maths, basic science, more advanced literacy) and some of it is, frankly, just there because it always has been (history, literature etc etc). there are some arguments in favour of this, many of which are banged on about endlessly by professional teachers and governments. But the education system has downsides as well: By teaching in fixed age bands children lose the pleasure of learning from older children and the valuable experience of teaching younger ones. By teaching all children the same things you completely eradicate all sorts of interesting conversations between the young. By insisting on teaching too many subjects too young you turn children right off pleasures they could otherwise have come to later in life. And whoever had the idea that it is a socially sensible thing to do to essentially lock up children away from the rest of society for the vast majority of their childhood should have been shot. Plus the education system is too readily used as a means of propaganda – which does the exact opposite of what education is supposed to do. |
