Cheap and Tasty Substitutes for Onions

We got some experts to tell you the best substitutes for onions, so that you can make some yummy dishes without spending too much! There is no such food which has substitutes so good that it can match up to its original taste. However, there are foods that can taste good even if a few ingredients are substituted. A lot of people use onions for most of their dishes and the simplest way to replace it is with tomatoes. However, with the escalating price of tomatoes today, an option that is even cheaper is preferable. People use a lot of onions to give volume and bulk to their gravy. While in restaurants, other ingredients or Cajun can be used which again are an expensive option for daily household use. I think Grounded Channa (besan) and yogurt/ chass is a good substitute for adding bulk to your gravy while substituting onions. So while you prepare a Punjabi curry or say a dish requiring a voluminous gravy, this combination is apt to give it it's bulk and also lends a good taste! However, leeks, which are usually closely associated with onions, can be easily used as a substitute at least in western dishes. In Indian dishes, onions are mostly used to give volume to the dishes. So there is no substitute for onions here. But for a flavor or otherwise, Leeks are a good option. Grounded Channa (besan) for instance is a good replacement for onions. You could alternatively use cabbage. In most cases cabbages can be used just like onions whenever needed. Asafoetida (dried latex of certain perennial herbs) is the most common substitute for onions. If you are using onions as a base for a food, you can use eggplant (beingan) as your base. Shibani Bajaj, Housewife Fennel (a plant species) is one of the most primary substitutes for onions. Shallots and scallions too are good substitutes of onions. They not only enable you to make your food well but also lend a good taste and aroma to the food. In my opinion they get the closest to an onion dish in terms of taste. Aarti Mehra, Housewife Eggplant is the best option to provide a base to your foods when you want to substitute onions for your gravy. So whenever you make an onion based dish, you may use eggplant to get the base. Carrots too can be easily used against onions. Carrots provide the sweet taste to your food incase it is required. A wise option would be to use spring onions along with eggplants. So while the eggplant can provide bulk or volume to your gravy, spring onions will provide a taste very similar to onions. |
